'Be a good Scout'

What with exciting recent goings in the world of the Roman Catholic clergy (for which see my other blog), and what with the obvious implications these goings on will have for traditional Roman Catholic Scouting, perhaps at some point I should get back to what this blog was supposed to be about when it started.

In the meantime though, here's one last taste of America.

Boy Scouts dressed in sweatshirts, jackets, hats and gloves loaded discarded Christmas trees into trucks Saturday morning.

The event was part of the annual Christmas tree pick-up. Troops 424 and 312 participated.

The service is free, but the Scouts asked for donations. It is a major fundraiser for the troops.

"It goes for a good cause, and it's all for the boys one way or the other," said Russ Melville, Boy Scout treasurer. "It's also a service to the community."

Melville said troops pick up about 2,000 trees; they have been picking up trees since 1975.

Troop 424 members Will Morgan, 15, and Tyler Alvarado, 15, both of Jackson, have been picking up trees for the Boy Scouts for five or six years. It builds character, they said.

"I like that we have to get up early and pick up trees and throw them. And what I dislike about it is being tired afterward," Alvarado said. "It makes us work when we don't want to."

The weather was ideal Saturday. In previous years, the trees have been frozen to the ground and slippery.

"The frost is nice because it's not too muddy," Morgan said.
Saturday was the only pick-up day this year. In past years, there have been two pick-up days.

Roger Roty, committee member and tree pick-up coordinator, said many people don't take their trees down until Jan. 6.

This was last year, actually, but it happens every year, this year included, so why not?
